Metabolic Kitchen for a New Geologic Era

For the next two years the Haus der Kulturen der Welt in Berlin will be exploring the anthropocene- the proposed beginning of the current  human-centric affected geologic era. I am working with the architecture group Raumlabor to build a metabolic kitchen from January 10-13.

Through this project, the revelation of this process demonstrates the co-evolution of human and machine that has taken place to enhance the emergence of cuisine and ultimately access to nutrition that helps the species perpetuate and survive. Come visit us and experience food as a subject of our evolution.

For the next six weeks I will be based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. It will be my second trip since 2010. This time I will be there in connection with the Berlin based art project, the Institut für Raumexperimente. I have started a food project about cultural knowledge exchange called Goorsha, which translates as friendship through food in the Amharic language. Please visit the website www.goorsha.net to learn more and get updates about our exciting work.

AESOP 4th Sustainable Food Planning Conference

The 4th AESOP (Association of European Schools of Planning) Food Planning Conference will take place from November 1-3, 2012 at the Technical University in Berlin. The theme this year will be evolving places, processes and products; changing food systems in an urban world. I will be presenting my Rations project as a case study for the growing convergence of food, design, technology and the arts as a contemporary creative trope and the usefulness of participatory models of engagement within food systems planning.

   Intergenerational Food Memories

Thursday, July 12 Taste and memory are strongly associated. It affects everyone from old to young. How can we express our taste memories, even if they are happy or sad? And what does that say about our lives, our personal and collective histories? I will be working with participants of every age who are invited to join the discussion at the BMW-Guggenheim Urban Lab as part of a day themed around Age. In the evening everyone is welcome to bring food to share and help prepare food while recalling food histories and family recipes.

Thursday July 12 Program: Lab Team member Corinne Rose introduces the topic of the day: Age. Today 20 percent of the population is older than 65; in 2060 every third person will have reached that age. The effect of the aging population on the urban environment and on social services is one of the most significant global challenges—and opportunities—of the next 50 years. How can we take advantage of the wisdom of past experience? Discover a range of innovative projects, community initiatives, and public services designed to meet this growing need.  This program is in German.

Cities and Intergenerational Interaction 2:30 pm–5 pm

   Making Parking Spaces Edible

Join me with the BMW-Guggenheim Urban Lab on Thursday June 28 for a series of actions on the street to find out what could happen if parking spaces were transformed into mobile gardens, kitchens, and experimental food labs. This event is inspired by the original concept of Rebar Parklets and PARK(ing) Days. It is intended to raise awareness of the importance of urban public space and the need to rethink the way we use our streets.
